We made it through those 10+ months of renovation hell. The construction guys were super sweet, taking care of the children, cleaning up every day after the construction was very difficult. Here were the results of all the hard work… We sure did love our house in Oakland, California. We lived in the beautiful are of Rockridge, in Oakland, California. We opted for this wrought iron gate around the house. It was stepped back at the entrance. Everyone had a hand in the choices of the fence. My daughter picked out the hearts, her favorite shape. My son picked out the baskets in the center panels of each part of the gate.
The vanity area upstairs. Another view of the backyard. Obviously, we loved the yard.
Upstairs chandelier. Kitchen with eat in kitchen. Another view of the kitchen. There were 4 full bedrooms, and an office upstairs and in the basement. As well as an area downstairs for laundry, and sitting room.
I remember those ten months of our lives like it was yesterday. Our house started like this…
Our little house was too small. We really did outgrow our house. All the kid items, One small bedroom for two children of the opposite sex. It was pretty cramped living.
We started planning with our architect, what we wanted, and how we wanted it. Then the interviews with construction workers. All the while, my mother in law peeked out her windows from across the street, and called every time someone would pull up to the house. “What are they doing there? Who are they? Was I aware that they were coming over to the house?”
The children had their own play house…
Every morning we got up, had our breakfast, and took items outside to play in our backyard. The kids had a garden, worms for composting, paints, crafts, we had a picnic everyday for 10 months. Fridays we went to the zoo.
The kids took all kinds of stuff from the house to make their little house a little kingdom for themselves.
Every week the kids couldn’t wait to see the animals at the zoo. At the time, my son believed that the goats needed him to visit. There was no way we could miss our visit. He was even “one of those kids”, he explained to the children that were frightened of the goats how they would not hurt them, and the goats just needed love and attention.
There were some days the kids just did not want to go in the backyard. They just wanted to play with their toys in the house. My son had “Bob the Builder” bulldozer that had to be in a certain position before we left it. Basically, it was his parking stall, but that day, we had to move our pantry (the whole pantry) into our dining room.
I tried to make everyday a fun day, and included taking photographs of how we spent each one of these days.
Sign language, Exercising with a ball, wagon, painting, and photography.
I sure wasn’t prepared for how ugly the house was going to look during the remodel…
We were so lucky to have a great crew that came over to take care of the house before it rained.
One of the many things I do with my time is renovate apartments. We own some property, and it is my job to manage the property. Some parts of my job I hate, and there are other aspects of it I enjoy. I like the renovation, and meeting the new tenants.
Here are some photos of my most recent renovation.
This is the kitchen. Everything is new in the kitchen, and I added granite countertops and lights. I like the process of making something new and fresh. I still need to add some flowers, and I will also keep a folder of applications, as well as a clip board for the potential applicants to utilize.
I have been a tenant in the past so I can empathize with tenants. I like meeting each person, and I have usually had great experience with finding new tenants. I have been doing this for 20 years so I go with my gut on which applicant to accept. I am pretty proud of this unit, so I am looking forward to meeting the right tenant for the unit.
