Mary Porter

My 9th Great Grandmother came over to America with her parents. She was born in Messing, Essex, in the year of 1637. Her father was John Porter and he was 43 when Mary was born. Anna White was her mother, and she was 37 when Mary was born. She was baptized in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut on October 1st, 1637.

Her family was one of the first settlers in Connecticut. She was part of the puritans that came for England under the leadership of Thomas Hooker. There were many resources that were harvested and sent back to England. Life was hard, and full of work from morning to night. Men worked in the fields, and women did work that was close to hearth. Within one century the population went from 5000 to 100,000. The colonist brought goats, chickens, and cows with them. Tension between the Native Americans culminated into war, which was named the Pequot War that lasted four years. This was the first war that was fought against the Native people.

During the year of 1658 Mary was married to Samuel Grant, she was 20 years old. She had seven sons, and four daughters. Mary died when she was 44 years old.
